What To Do After An Accident

Feb. 18, 2020

Many people find themselves in the same place after an accident: unprepared.

Statistically, it is likely you will be involved in an accident at some point in your life. Like many motorists, however, you hope it won't happen to you. If you do get in an accident, here are things to remember.

How To Be Ready For An Accident Before It Happens

After an accident, you will need your driver's license, insurance and registration information. You will give this information to the other driver as well as to the police.

Also, it's a good idea to keep a safety kit in your vehicle. The kit should include simple first aid items as well as reflective or glowing road markers to keep traffic away from the accident.

What To Do At The Scene

After a crash, follow these steps:

  • Check yourself for injuries.

  • Check others in your vehicle for injuries.

  • Call emergency personnel so police can investigate and injured people can receive medical attention.

  • Gather as much information as possible. Take notes of what you can remember and what other drivers and witnesses say about what they saw and remember from the accident. If it is safe, get pictures of the scene.

  • Only sign documents from the police. Do not sign anything from another driver or anyone else.

  • Do not apologize or admit fault in any way! Fault will be determined later from the evidence and witness statements.

  • Stay at the scene until the police and other drivers leave.

Seek Medical Attention

If you did not have an urgent medical need at the scene, make an appointment to see a doctor as soon as possible. Even if you are not in pain, being checked by a doctor will ensure that you receive the treatment you need as many injuries do not manifest themselves until later.

Then speak with an experienced attorney who understands the details involved in a New York motor vehicle accident. A lawyer will be able to help you understand your situation and will know what to do next.
